CAN YOU BELIEVE IT! HOME IN TWO WEEKS!

Well mom, I´d like you to mark that appointment. You´re certainly right that our missions teach us more than just a thing or two. I certainly understand the scriptures a lot more. It´s exciting because every time I read them, I discover so many things. It´ll be great to see how Rick will start to understand and use the scriptures more and more. I started reading the Book of Mormon again. I´ve already read through it a few times and I read the whole old testament while I´ve been out here. 

It really doesn´t seem like I´ll be home in a couple weeks. I´m having trouble getting that through my head. My whole mission has gone by really quickly and I wouldn´t say that it´s going by slowly now but I just feel like I have to have more time here. I guess I won´t be that excited about coming home until I´m on the plane and it finally "hits" me. 

Things are slow around here as usual. We have some families that need to get married and some youth who can't be baptized while their parents don´t let them. I feel like next transfer my companion and his new companion will have a good number of baptisms though.

I guess I can´t think of much to write because I feel so weird now that I´m going home soon. Lots of people are going to make me cake and things before I go though =)

Taking in a lot here

I feel like your prayers have been helping me a lot.  I´ve had some real happy moments this week and I´ve laughed a lot. I had an interview with the mission president on Wednesday. I told him that even as hard as it´s been, I wouldn´t trade my mission experience for anything. He said that upon speaking to some of his missionaries who have completed their missions and returned home that there are missionaries who had it really easy on their missions and come back the same as they were before. He knows I´m in a hard area and things aren´t easy but we agreed that I´ll be able to take a lot away from this. I know that I have to suffer a bit to understand what my Savior did for me. I´m sure it´s so that I can more fully understand and testify of His atonement to others. 

I found a Twix bar for the first time on my mission. It was really tiny. A little bigger than my pinky and it´s the only size they sell. The funny thing is it was about 50 cents and I had to buy it to take a picture of it. I took a picture of it next to my name tag. 

Thursday we went on the local radio show for about five minutes to invite people to come to Church. The radio station is on the second floor of our apartment building.The Radio guy (no I don´t remember the english word for this) is an inactive member of the Church. I want to help him a lot. 

On my mission I´ve tried a lot to help others and often times I´ve found that they don´t want to be helped. I´ve learned a valuable lesson from all this and that is that we have to keep plugging away anyways. I´ve cried often times because of what I desire for others but they don´t desire for themselves. I have begun to comprehend how Christ felt when he cried " Jerusalem, Jerusalem, how often would I have gathered [thee] and ye would not!" 

It´s hard but it´s also been the best, most character shaping time of my life. Some families will have eternal life because of the humble efforts I was able to put forth with my companions. I also don´t think there could ever be a time where I´ve laughed harder than when I´m together with some Elders in an apartment or in a van on the way to zone conference. There´s been happy moments and there´s been hard moments and even in the hardest I´ve always felt like everything will work out because of the Rock of Christ I´ve been building upon.  

I´ve made so many true and lasting friends here. I´m also instantly liked by new missionaries and I am also able to instantly bond with new Elders.  

Tomorrow at district meeting, I will be giving a training on the use of the Book of Mormon in our contacts and lessons. It´s good to be able to offer some help to other Elders and I´m glad to have this bit of responsibility close to the end of my mission. My district leader is Elder Hollandsworth and he´s a really humble guy who says I have a lot to offer.  

On Sunday I went with my companion and some members of the Elders Quorum to give a blessing to a nice lady in the ward. She fell ill a couple of weeks ago and has steadily been getting worse. As we gave her a blessing I felt such a strong spiritual presence. Every blessing I give, I feel that it renews my testimony. 

I´m trying so hard to make the best of my time here. We´ve been reactivating a family that moved here from Quaraí. They have been going to Church for the last couple of weeks. We´re going to try to baptize their ten year old daughter before I go home. I´m confident that this will work out and I feel it´ll be a really special way to end things out.

Cicero stopped coming to Church a while ago. He´s not progressing and we had to stop visiting him. 

One of the little boys that we were going to baptize has been coming to Church every Sunday. His family hasn´t come for the last two weeks. They think it´s too soon to baptize him or they want to all get baptized as a family or something along those lines. The parents would have to get married (which is something we want) but that takes at least a month for the papers to get back and they haven´t even started. 

One family from Quaraí has moved to São Pedro. They´d been inactive for about ten years. Now they are becoming active here and we will be baptizing their daughter who is now 12. 

We taught a lesson to a nice family yeterday. The good thing is that the branch president came along with us and it was clear that the spirit was felt there. 

I love you guys so much! The mission really does transform us. I wouldn´t trade anything for the experiences I´ve had here and I always knew the Church was true but my testimony has really taken shape here. My emails have been shorter because we´re not making much progress here. I´m sure that after I get home, some of the people 

I´ve been working with will be baptized.

Baptisms Coming! & Eu sinto falta comida chinesa

Ha! Rick's face is priceless. Well it sure is interesting to see where Rick is going. I´m sure that he´ll have a really funny accent (or two) when he calls/gets home. We´ll also have some time to clown around before he´s off to the field.  

This week has been great. We´ve been working with a family for a couple weeks and this Saturday the two young boys of the family will be baptized. Their dad wants to get baptized and so does the mom (she just doesn´t know when) and they are going to go to the Church and always make sure the boys stay active. One of the boys is only eleven years old and during our last lesson he bore testimony about how he felt that the Church was true upon his first visit. My companion gave him a scripture case so that he could carry his books to the Church and he cried and hugged my companion. 

A nice single mom has also accepted baptism and wasn´t at the Church this week but we bet she´ll come next week. 

Life has been good. I´m going to finish the mission here in São Pedro. Friday we´ll have zone conference and I’ll bear my testimony in front of the zone. That´s gonna make me cry.

I´m not trunky. However ... I can´t wait for the day I´ll be able to eat Chinese food.

Bright future

Well I´m sure Rick will get his call this week. I´m anxious to know where he´s going. I can´t believe that Mckenna will be speaking Chinese. That´s awesome. I remember the story I heard at the CTM of an Elder who wanted to give up because of problems learning Portuguese. His instructor told him to give it one more chance and he agreed. The funny thing is that the next day, the instructor sent him to study with the Elders who were learning Chinese. After just a few hours the Elder ran up to the instructor and told him that he´d have no problem learning Portuguese.

Elder Hollandsworth and I will be getting home on the same day. I would assume that Elder Jensen will be there too, but I don´t know.

Recently we found a family and yesterday they came to Church. The couple and their three boys seem to really be enjoying things there. Ciçero wasn´t at Church yesterday but I think he was out of town. We´re teaching the non-member spouses of a few members and the future looks bright.  The father in this family that we´re teaching offered a humble prayer after our lesson on Saturday and it was really great to see the spirit instructing and inspiring him. 

Time was passing by real fast but now not so much. That´s good because I´ve been wanting time to slow down a bit here towards the end of the mission.

It's going well

Well this week we found a new family. They are fantastic (before I get you too excited though, they didn´t come to Church yet). They really felt the spirit and liked us and the member that we were teaching the lesson with. At the end they all went out to the front of the house and watched us (big smiles on their faces) as we went away. We found this family through a member. He was giving a ride to some people he worked with and he put on some Church hymns. One of the women he works with started asking questions about the Church and said that she felt so good with those hymns in the car. He took down her address and we went with him to visit the woman’s family. They were going to go to the Church yesterday but something must have gone wrong. 

Ciçero came to Church! He shaved and got a haircut. He´s looking sharp. I´ve seen that he´s changed a lot and has a genuine desire to follow Jesus Christ. 

The mission is hard but very rewarding. I know that if I wasn´t here there´s so many things that I wouldn´t have learned. From big lessons to little things I´ve noticed, the mission has been so important to me and I knew even when I was just starting that what I´ve learned and the changes I´ve experienced are things I couldn´t get anywhere else. I don´t know how many BIG miracles or experiences I´ve had but there´s so many times I just feel grateful to have the gift of the holy ghost and for knowing what I know. 

I remember waking up this week and saying my prayers and just feeling so grateful for that very real communication that I have with my Heavenly Father. I have come to know God the Father and Jesus Christ and I really recognize Christ’s role as Savior and mediator in my life. It´s also been in this area that I had one of my strongest testimony building experiences. I was in our small apartment about to go to bed and I just felt the real truth behind what we do. I felt the spirit so strongly. It was something simple but undeniable. 

I haven´t baptized many. But most of those I´ve baptized are active and prospering in this Gospel. Another miracle is my ability to speak Portuguese. People confuse me with a Brazilian sometimes and I can understand  everything, I can testify and I can even joke around. I know that this is a miracle because it required a lot of prayer at the beginning and now I pick everything up like a snap. 

Correct my grammar. I know that some of what I´m typing seems weird. It´s because I don´t usually speak English around here.

Well it´s funny that you´re going to serve a pork roast for the missionaries. Some lady from our ward was saying that because the Lord said in the Old Testament that his saints shouldn´t eat pork -and because He doesn´t change- she doesn´t eat pork. We laughed and tried to tell her that those things were fulfilled in the Lord but we were wasting our breath. 

You don´t have to worry about me messing around on the computer too much. I know that there´s all in one computers that make using a webcam/skype super easy and has some other neat stuff. I also don´t know how things have changed. I heard there´s already a windows 8. Shows how long I´ve been gone. 

Tell Rick I think the hardest thing about getting your wisdom teeth out is not even being able to slurp noodles. If I remember correctly I was eating pure broth for a while.

Plugging along

Well I sat down today to write this email home and I noticed that the computer chair was really low and so I fixed that. Then I remembered how I always used to lower the computer chair at home and you guys hated it! I don´t have that habit anymore but it was funny to remember. 

This week we had a district meeting in a different chapel than last transfer (the districts and division were changed.) We have to take a bus to Santa Maria for district meeting and with this new chapel we had a hard time getting there on time. In fact we got there late. It´s all okay though. Tomorrow we´ll be there on time. 

This last week we also had a zone conference. I learned a lot and we tried really hard during the week. It´s crazy to think that next Zone Conference will be my last. 

We´ve got some new investigators. This week we´ll also be teaching a lot of lessons with members. 

Some lady came up to us yesterday and said that she´d love to come to Church but because it was at nine in the morning she didn´t think she´d go. She said she sleeps late and I told her to make an exception for Sundays. She said if God wants her to go this next week then he´ll wake her up. I told her that God helps those who helps themselves and she said that I was right. Then she called me and my companion hunks. That´s sort of how it would be translated to English. She used the word bonitão which means big beautiful.

Everyone has been noticing that I have some white hair already. Just like Adam and Uncle Bruce.

Cicero should be getting baptized on the fifteenth. Maybe his baptism will end up at the end of the month to coincide with an activity though.

Well I wasn´t transferred but my companion was. I now have a new companion named Elder Mattias (as in the Apostle Matthias who replaced Judas Iscariot). He´s a lot of fun and a good teacher. He´s got another year left of his mission. I found out that one of the guys I baptized at the start of my mission - Valnei - is snow the councilor to the branch president in São Borja. Marçelo and Kelly are also a family which I taught (I was transferred before I got to baptize them) who are really active. We´re teaching a guy named Ciçero here (the same guy who we´ve been teaching a while). I gave him doctrine and covenants last week and he already read it (ALL OF IT!). Ofcouse I think he read it so fast that it mostly just left him with questions. His baptism is coming up!    

It´s a real tragedy what happened to that nightclub. I heard that it was really tiny and so when the fire happened and everyone tried to get out at the same time it just didn´t work. The body gaurds also didn´t let people leave at first because there were some who hadn´t payed yet. Because of the fire, the Church is helping out and our zone conference was moved from today to later in the week. 

Elder Hollandsworth is my District Leader. We´ll see how it all goes tommorow in district meeting.

Tell Tyler I hope he´s feeling better and that I want him to have a happy birthday. Tell Rick I´m proud of him!

Ivy? Well it seems like there´s some real freedom with names going on here. No one from the family will be able to criticize me when I name my kids after lesser known Bible characters (Asher here we come) or if I give one of my daughters a Brazilian name (Like Ana Paula). Of course my wife will have a say in all this too.

So we were teaching a guy a few weeks ago who was really interested but then he didn´t want to continue. The cool thing is that this same guy found us on the street this weekend and came up to say that we were right. Then we spoke with him a bit more and we marked his baptismal date. 

We´re also finding a few other people and we´re trying to reactivate some others. 

I have no clue if I´ll be transferred or not. I found out today later this afternoon.
Because I´ll be coming home on April 9th, I need to know

Well you never know where Rick could go. I heard about a guy who baptized two hundred in Utah last year. So if Rick's blessing says he´s going to baptize many it doesn't mean he has to leave the country. If he went to Brazil that´d be cool though! So my companion is here more time in the area and I think he´ll be transferred this next week but I might stay another transfer. We don´t know yet.

It sounds like you guys are having fun now that the van is having problems. With Rick having to bum rides from you guys it´s like he´s in the seminary car again. 

I´m going to try to have a good successful week. Pray for us and I´ll pray for you guys to have a successful week too.

Well there´s a week left in the transfer. I don´t know if I´ll be transferred at the end of the transfer or in the next one. Dad told me about Rick´s Patriarchal blessing. That´s exciting!

This week we didn´t really find anyone knew or anything. It was sort of cool though, because we and the members went around to the inactive men in the branch to distribute this years manual and then we invited them out to this next Sunday.

It´s hard working with in-actives but there´s not as many in the branch as some other wards and branches I´ve been through.

Well, that investigator who was really interested is now no longer interested. We think he started to doubt some things and instead of letting us respond his questions he just backed out. We have other investigators though. The husband of an inactive member is starting to go and we´re reactivating the family. About two weeks ago this same man and his family went to Church. Things aren´t going too terrifically but I´m happy and I´m sure the holidays will be great here. There´s a member family that´s going to make dinner for us. 

After Christmas I´m going to fast a bit and we´ll try and find some other investigators because we need new ones. 

Nothing really new. The members are terrific here. We got a watermelon from a member family yesterday. It was a really good watermelon!

Well Sunday we had an Investigator. He´s the same one who came the Sunday before. He´s real interested and we have a lesson with him today. After Church we had lunch at a member family house and they had already prepared a cake for me and everything. Yesterday was a Zone Conference with a Secret Santa sort of activity afterwards. So today is p-day and that is why I didn´t write yesterday. 

Well since today is P-day we went to the Super-Market to buy some things and we saw our Investigator Ciçero just happened to be passing by in the street. We talked for him a moment and it´s good because we joked and are developing a friendly climate. We are going to visit him today at six. The cool thing is that he´s already expressed interest in doing divisions/splits with us. Of course, he´ll have to learn more and be baptized before that. Ciçero´s brother is married and was investigating the Church before I got here. Unfortunately, when the Elders and members of the Church spoke about marriage this couple just sort of stopped going to Church and disappeared. If everything goes right with Ciçero, we can maybe teach a lesson with him to his brother and his sister in law.

I don´t think I´ll be able to use a webcam this year. <insert angry scream from Devin's mother> The problem is that none of the members have one. I´ll make sure to give you guys a number on P-day that you guys will call on the next day (Christmas!) and you should buy a phone card like the last times.

December 10 - with pictures!

Well mom,

I haven´t gotten your package yet but I might get it this week at District Meeting. We´ve had a new investigator come to Church every week for the last three weeks. The thing is that the first one who came two weeks ago is traveling and the investigator who came last week had a work emergency but I think we´ll have all three investigators and some others next week. we invited a bunch of people this week who didn´t end up coming but the investigator who did come ... well he´s new. He just sort of showed up at the Church on saturday and they happened to be having an activity (he thought it was always open and felt like checking it out) we invited him to come on sunday and he did. He seems really interested and we´ll see where it all goes. There´s a non member family who makes us lunch on P-day and they accept the messages but they are always in a hurry after lunch so we haven´t taught them much yet.

Hey Everybody,

Well, this weekend we invited a woman that we've been visiting and reactivating and her husband is frequenting and investigating the Church. The same man who visited last week didn't make it this week but he should be at Church with his wife next week. We managed to get a lot of semi active people to come this week. Another great thing is that I just found out that there's a nice lady who wants to hear our messages and be baptized (I haven't met her yet) that we're going to start teaching this week.

We usually just eat something at home on P-day but we have some investigators who make lunch for us on P-day so we shared a message with them today it's going well.

There's a ton of Christmas decorations in the center of town. I'll make sure to take pictures. There's no snow... It's sooooo hot today. I feel like I'm melting. The funny thing is that my companion is kind of chubby but he's from a place that's usually even hotter and so he barely even sweats. I, on the other hand, suffer in this heat.

One of the ladies in the ward was talking about how her daughter was taking the disscussions but she (the lady) would hide herself inside the house and didn't want to hear. Then she said how she was going through a lot of problems and heard one of the Elders talking and said it just sounded right and she entered in the main room and starting listening to the message. Now she's baptized and happy. It's nice to hear some good stories from time to time.

The branch is small but we're fighting to make a difference here. I'm trying to work as hard as I ever have.

I know that this Church is true.

As for whether or not Rick should head out before I get home or not, I'd say that's up to him. One thing that's funny is that the mission passes by fast and that after the first while there's not really any homesickness. I think that when I get home it'll be a lot different but I don't think Rick will percieve it too much if he's out working hard. But it's all up to him.

Good week

Well this week we found a bunch of families and one investigator went to Church (it´s been a while since that´s happened) and his wife will be coming with him next week. We also have a few more young couples who should be coming this next week.

It was great because we´ve been visiting a few inactive members as well and we´re trying to reactivate and complete these families.

Practically the entire small branch want to go teaching with us. We don´t usually get many references but we got a couple this week.

I went on a devision with my Zone leader ... Man that guy works hard! I actually learned a lot from him.

I´m trying hard out here.  I love this Gospel.

 I have to go to Santa Maria today so I can´t talk much.

So they say São Pedro is pretty rural and small but compared to the majority of the other areas I´ve been through (most of them were small towns) it´s pretty developed. It´s just a little ways away from Santa Maria which is very developed. It´s funny because when I told them all the areas I´d passed through some Elders said that I got just the "holes" of the mission. It´s like they say though, it´s the missionary that makes the area. I liked a lot of the areas that I passed through and I´m liking this one.

This last week was slow but the good thing is that a few of the people from the branch want to go with us to teach some investigators this week. We just need to find some good investigators. Some of them accept our visits but it´s hard to say if it´s going anywhere.

So I couldn´t tell you that Thanksgiving was just around the corner because they don´t celebrate it here. It´s called Ação de Graças and they sort of know what it is but no one celebrates it here. Well the mission is passing by fast! I remember when I called home last Christmas and another Christmas is already rolling around the corner.

You asked if I wanted anything for my birthday or Christmas. Surprise me. Too bad you can't send root beer, it doesn´t exist here!

So It was a slow week but the good thing is that we got a few people who were semi inactive to come back to the branch and we found a few young married couples this week. We haven´t had too much success lately but I´ve been strengthening my testimony a lot and my companion and I are getting along together well. 

I hope Rick's getting his papers in.

CATCH UP

November 12, 2012

Well this week was pretty interesting. We have a few new investigators. Unfortunately, no investigators went to Church on Sunday. The good thing is that they have a pretty decent percentage of active to baptized members here in São Pedro. Unfortunately, these last few years few of the new baptisms have stayed active.

We have our meetings in what used to be the police station which is on the top floor of a bunch of shops - including an ice cream shop. It´s actually pretty nice inside and the only funny thing is the baptismal font which is like a tarp-ish tub stretched out on pvc-pipe. It´s got a machine that heats the water up though. 

The works not going anyway fast. The numbers of new investigators and everything for the missionaries in São Pedro were never very high but we´re trying to increase our numbers and success a bit more every week. It´s been so hot out! Today it´s actually tolerable.

Our meeting house is real close to a big catholic church and the funny thing is that there´s a Saint on top but they put the wrong saint on top. There´s supposed to be some famous saint on top of the Church and some Saint of harvest in the middle of some field in the middle of nowhere. They switched them. So there´s some random farming saint on top of the Catholic Church in the town square. 

we live in a real nice apartment which is on the top floor of like a ...well it´s certainly not a mall but it´s a place with a few stores on the bottom floor. There´s a gate to our floor so instead of just locking our apartment door we can lock the gate. MY companion and I woke up at one in the morning on Sunday because somebody who I´m assuming just had to be drunk broke the gate. We thought somebody else would handle it so we didn´t go out to see what it was. We just heard the noise and the next day saw that someone had pried the door open. I think he lost his key and didn´t feel like calling someone to unlock the door so he just managed to bend the steel bars somehow...(I think we have a super human living on our floor).

It´s extremely hot out and of course the members - and all people here - eat egg salad (Super heavy) during every meal. I don´t like mayonnaise! Of course it´s the first thing the members tell me to eat. I´m not trying to complain about food or hospitality of the members or anything. Just this one thing I ... well I´m learning patience.

I´m in a small town not too far from Santa Maria. It´s a part of the Santa Maria stake. It´s a tiny branch (around thirty attend) but it´s got some nice people in it. My companion has been out for a year and 3 months . I´m senior companion. This week has been pretty good. The reference we got from the LZ is working out. They seem to be really receptive people and this week we´re going to challenge them to be baptized. The father in the family has two sisters who are members of the branch so they can help. We painted a house this week for a nice old lady who will be moving in to the branch. Unfortunately, there´s no member families moving in the area. The good thing is that I get to find some families to bring to the branch.

We´ve set some goals for this month and we´re going to work real hard. The mission president says that we have to imagine that we´re the first missionaries who ever passed through the area. We had a great zone conference last week and I learned a lot. I also ate a lot of ice cream. It´s just not the same as American Ice cream (It´s too...icy or fake or something). I tried making a float with Sprite and it just made me home sick for a root beer float. I also ate pizza this last week. While it´s not the same thing it´s really pretty good. =)

Mom, as for the nap, it was on a P-day.  The lady who cleans our apartment is a nice old lady in the branch who has nothing to do so she likes to clean the apartment. I always keep it tidy anyways. The funny thing is that she gets disappointed if there´s not at least something for her to do there. That´s why I´ve been doing the dishes and everything but I´ve also been leaving some books on the table in a (exaggerated) disorderly fashion. She doesn´t Iron our clothes so I´ve still got some responsibility. You said the pictures seemed old. Not really, they are from the beginning to the end of my time in Quaraí. I´ll make sure to take lots of pictures here in São Pedro do Sul.

So a couple of weeks ago when I said that my companion was going to be transferred by emergency...that didn´t end up happening. Basically someone in another area was supposed to switch with him for one reason or another (I think the Elder in the other area wasn´t getting along with his companion) but it didn´t end up happening. So I finished my time in Quarai with the same companion - Elder Williom. I had six months in Quaraí and now I was transferred from there to São Pedro do Sul. I had to leave my investigators for my other area. That´s okay though because the work was going along real slowly and now someone else will breathe some life in to the area.  
My companion in the new area is Elder Soares. He´s not the companion that I would have had if the emergency transfer had happened. He´s a good, humble guy. The apartment is clean...oh and we have a nice lady in the ward who cleans our apartment for us. When I arrived here last night my companion was telling me that we don´t have that many people that we´re teaching and the people are not really coming through with commitments. The good thing is that last night I got a call from my Zone leader and he had a reference for our area that should work out. I also made a contact with a nice lady at the grocery store today. We´ll see how it all works out. 
This is the first time I´ve been in an area that doesn´t have a chapel. We have a small branch and apparently we meet on the second floor of what used to be a police dept. This is going to be fun!

Devin's twenty cents worth about Conference...and other things

Well, Conference is interesting in other countries. It´s just like we do at the chapel. They set up the projector and everything. Of course because of the time differences, the times get a bit funny. Priesthood Session gets over at like midnight here. It´s great because it´s the only day we get to stay out late. It´s of course much more awesome because we get to hear the words of living Prophets. So it´s all the same as at home except there´s like an option to change the language. Translators speak live over the speakers and it´s like they are speaking Portuguese (Of course the mouths don´t match up). The other funny thing is that the video doesn´t change, so when it gives the lyrics to the Hymn that we sing as a congregation it´s all in English and the members don´t sing. It´s also tough because the audio of the English lyrics throws it off. I sang sort of softly in English with one of the Brazilian elders who knows English enough to follow along.
So I lit up like a Christmas tree when I heard the Prophet announce the news. I think we were all thrown a bit off guard. It was great to see that they showed some of the youth reactions in the Conference Center. So we had to stick around in between conference sessions and they showed some Church news in the chapel. It was a Press Conference that was translated from English to Portuguese. I got the chance to translate for the other Elders who didn´t understand. The conference explained more about the news. I immediately thought about Rick. Rick should go as soon as possible. As soon as I got out here Í felt very strongly that I should have come out earlier. There´s a lot that passed through my mind before (like "I don´t know two years is a long time") but it all got clear early on in the mission. Back at home I felt like maybe I wasn´t ready, but the truth is, the Lord and the work prepare you. The only way you learn is doing it. I think that if Rick goes out now, it will give him a great advantage. Another thing is that as soon as I got on the plane for the mission I thought I´d get real anxious or homesick but I just took it a step at a time and felt good. At the MTC you don´t feel home sick at all (It´s a lot of fun). Then you get to the field and things start to sink in but you just get in to the work and it goes well. I´ll have to wait a bit longer to see him but the Mission will pass by so fast for him and we´ll be telling mission stories over dinner in no time. It´s great to just be involved in the work. It´s a big load off your shoulders and you don´t have to stick around the house doing nothing. I love the friends and experiences and the way that the mission shapes my life.I´m positive that the number of Sister missionaries from the states will more than triple in the near future. Before they all felt that 21 is a long time to wait. Now they can get home around the same time as the guys. The other great thing is that the number of missionaries in the field at the same time will climb. It´s now around 58 thousand. As the number climbs the converts will too and many other youth will be off on missions.
There was a bit of a flood here. I´m really close to the River Uruguay and every few years when it rains hard it overflows both there and here in this small town. It got a few blocks around here. The houses are all fine though and it never got anywhere near our apartment or the chapels.
Last week and earlier today I had internet problems so I couldn´t write before. I remember that Adam always had good things to say about his mission experience. Another good reason that I´m out here is now I can understand some of the things he felt. This week, the other set of Elders in the district had a baptism. It was the baptism of an 8 year old girl and her nine year old brother. The dad did the baptizing. We were at the Chapel to help and we sang that "I like to look for rainbows" in Portuguese as a district. The other great thing is that the senior couple missionaries sang too. You´d love them. They are some of the happiest people I´ve seen. The way they just have fun as they serve is inspiring. When the kids were baptized, it was terrific to just see the ordinance and to feel the spirit. A baptism always strengthens my testimony of the restoration. I found out that the majority of the people I´ve baptized so far on the mission are going strong and have callings in the ward. There´s a family that I taught which has a mom that´s teaching primary and the dad is the young men’s leader. They also give cake to the missionaries once in a while...that´s good too.

RATS! We were really hoping to hear from Devin this week and get his scope on how he felt about conference and the new age approvals for missions and his brother Rick most likely going sooner than expected.  We assume he must've had zone mtgs and he'll catch us next week.  -Joy
